If you are the type of traveler who prefers to escape from the more popular travel destinations, you should come check out Xela, also called Quetzaltenango (Careful with your pronunciation . . . Chela means beer. If you want to end up in Quetzaltenango and not in the corner pub, ask for “Shayla!”)
Quetzaltenango is the second most important city in the country and here you can experience the unique fusion between the two Guatemalas: that of the Quiché Mayas (one of the 23 groups of Maya descendents in the country) and the Mestiza, who together have converted the region into one of the most thriving national economies.
The Black Cat Xela serves as a point of departure for journeys through nearby indigenous pueblos, hikes to the Santa Maria volcano, or a relaxing trip to the nearby hot springs. Furthermore, you will find an active culture of cafés, restaurants, libraries, or if you want, many bars and dance clubs where you can boogie down.
THE BLACK CAT is in the old Casa Kaheler, a classic example of Xela’s beautiful hotels, situated one block from the central park and one of the most beautiful historical centers in all of Central America. With the same services as our hostel in Antigua, the hostel is in a beautiful house with a patio on which you can eat a peaceful breakfast, sip coffee, or simply relax and soak up the sun with a good book. Our bar attracts locals, as well as other travelers, so you can be sure to practice your Spanish!
